Google hangout is a very good feature in gmail which acts as a gmail chat messenger on web Gmail and all the Android devices are now preinstalled with the hangout app which allows the users to do text, voice and video chat. You don't need to send request like facebook and yahoo to chat with anyone. Just search the name from the search box and start chatting. But the problem with this feature is that any stranger can chat with other. and that persons name remains there in the contact list. Simple trick can remove the person to whom we don't want to chat without blocking permanently.


Step 1:  Block the person to whom you don't want to see in contact list.
Step 2: keep that contact to be blocked for min 2 days.
Step 3: After 2 days click in the small arrow and select Blocked people

Step 4: Unblock the contact you don't want to see in your contact list.

Only this way you can remove the person from the Chat list of Hangout. because Google have not provided any feature to remove the contact from the chat list. Removing email address from the Contact List also not helpful in removing the contact from the hangout contact list.
