32 Websites blocked in India

shutterstock_160868918_India India

Following an order issued by the Department of Telecom in India, ISPs have blocked 32 sites including Vimeo, Dailymotion, GitHub and Pastebin across the country.

Users across India have complained about being unable to access the aforementioned sites and many others. Today, Centre for Internet & Society director Pranesh Prakash was among the first to share the circular that went round to local ISPs on Dec 17 demanding that they block access to multiple sites.

The availability of these sites is currently varied across the country, depending on whether the ISPs that operate in different service areas have taken action to comply with the order.

Indian ruling party BJP’s National Head Arvind Gupta confirmed the block order via Twitter, citing ‘anti-India content’ hosted on those sites from terrorist outfit ISIS:

While Gupta claims that those sites which remove the objectionable content in question will be unblocked, the block order is problematic for a number of reasons: it doesn’t clearly state to ISPs why they have to block these sites and for how long; furthermore, the blocks are site-wide and affect users who depend on these online services for work.

In addition, no statements were issued by the Indian government authorities to the public informing them of the ban until the circular was leaked today.

We’ve reached out to Vimeo and Github for comment on whether the sites were indeed contacted by local authorities and asked to take down content, and will update this post when we hear back.

Why almost every E-Commerce Company promoting Mobile app?

Today we see almost every E-Commerce company is promoting their mobile apps on internet as well as on TV Advertisement. Some companies like amazon attracting people by giving an offer by which users need to install the amazon app on their device then they will be eligible for winning Google Nexus 5 as a prize.
Basic reasons of diverting from websites to mobile app is due to huge smartphone users..1.08 billion(Source) smartphone users in the world having Android, IOS and Windows as Operating system. So it is very easy to access app instead of opening the website on the Smartphone or Tablet. It also saves time and bandwidth which goes wasted in loading the website on a mobile phone. Sometime due to very low RAM and small CPU in smartphones some website crashed out.
Mobile apps running on a smartphone have interface designed on the mobile phone and that interface is not downloaded every time we use the app. only the images and the prices are downloaded when accessing the products from the app. It saves time and bandwidth of both client and server. Resolution of images on mobile phone and Tablet apps is also very low which saves lots of bandwidth and space. Ultimately using mobile apps instead of huge websites which are bandwidth and space hungry is very convenient for both user and the E-Commerce Companies.

SEO Basics: 8 Essentials When Optimizing Your Site

Basic search engine optimization (SEO) is fundamental. And essential. SEO will help you position your website properly to be found at the most critical points in the buying process or when people need your site.
What are search engines looking for? How can you build your website in a way that will please both your visitors/customers, as well as Google, Bing, and other search engines? Most importantly, how can SEO help your web presence become more profitable?
During the Introduction to SEO session at SES New York, Carolyn Shelby (@CShel), Director of SEO, Chicago Tribune/435 Digital, fully explained the extreme value SEO can deliver to a site, and stressed the importance of basic SEO using the following analogy:
"Skipping the basics and spending all your time and money on social and 'fancy stuff' is the same as skipping brushing your teeth and showering, but buying white strips and wearing expensive cologne," Shelby said.
Although the Introduction to SEO session was intended for industry newcomers, Shelby's tips offer important reminders for even experienced SEO professionals who have been optimizing sites for years.

What is SEO, Exactly?

The goal of foundational SEO isn't to cheat or "game" the search engines. The purpose of SEO is to:
  • Create a great, seamless user experience.
  • Communicate to the search engines your intentions so they can recommend your website for relevant searches.

1. Your Website is Like a Cake

think-of-your-site-like-a-cake
Your links, paid search, and social media acts as the icing, but your content, information architecture, content management system, and infrastructure act as the sugar and makes the cake. Without it, your cake is tasteless, boring, and gets thrown in the trash.

2. What Search Engines Are Looking For

Search engines want to do their jobs as best as possible by referring users to websites and content that is the most relevant to what the user is looking for. So how is relevancy determined?
  • Content: Is determined by the theme that is being given, the text on the page, and the titles and descriptions that are given.
  • Performance: How fast is your site and does it work properly?
  • Authority: Does your site have good enough content to link to or do other authoritative sites use your website as a reference or cite the information that's available?
  • User Experience: How does the site look? Is it easy to navigate around? Does it look safe? Does it have a high bounce rate?

3. What Search Engines Are NOT Looking For

Search engine spiders only have a certain amount of data storage, so if you're performing shady tactics or trying to trick them, chances are you're going to hurt yourself in the long run. Items the search engines don't want are:
  • Keyword Stuffing: Overuse of keywords on your pages.
  • Purchased Links: Buying links will get you nowhere when it comes to SEO, so be warned.
  • Poor User Experience: Make it easy for the user to get around. Too many ads and making it too difficult for people to find content they're looking for will only increase your bounce rate. If you know your bounce rate it will help determine other information about your site. For example, if it's 80 percent or higher and you have content on your website, chances are something is wrong.

4. Know Your Business Model

While this is pretty obvious, so many people tend to not sit down and just focus on what their main goals are. Some questions you need to ask yourself are:
  • What defines a conversion for you?
  • Are you selling eyeballs (impressions) or what people click on?
  • What are your goals?
  • Do you know your assets and liabilities?

5. Don't Forget to Optimize for Multi-Channels

multichannel-optimization
Keyword strategy is not only important to implement on-site, but should extend to other off-site platforms, which is why you should also be thinking about multi-channel optimization. These multi-channel platforms include:
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Email
  • Offline, such as radio and TV ads
Being consistent with keyword phrases within these platforms will not only help your branding efforts, but also train users to use specific phrases you're optimizing for.

6. Be Consistent With Domain Names

Domain naming is so important to your overall foundation, so as a best practice you're better off using sub-directory root domains (example.com/awesome) versus sub-domains (awesome.example.com). Some other best practices with domain names are:
  • Consistent Domains: If you type in www.example.com, but then your type in just example.com and the "www" does not redirect to www.example.com, that means the search engines are seeing two different sites. This isn't effective for your overall SEO efforts as it will dilute your inbound links, as external sites will be linking to www.example.com and example.com.
  • Keep it Old School: Old domains are better than new ones, but if you're buying an old domain, make sure that the previous owner didn't do anything shady to cause the domain to get penalized.
  • Keywords in URL: Having keywords you're trying to rank for in your domain will only help your overall efforts.

7. Optimizing for Different Types of Results

In addition to optimizing for the desktop experience, make sure to focus on mobile and tablet optimization as well as other media.
  • Create rich media content like video, as it's easier to get a video to rank on the first page than it is to get a plain text page to rank.
  • Optimize your non-text content so search engines can see it. If your site uses Flash or PDFs, make sure you read up on the latest best practices so search engines can crawl that content and give your site credit for it.

8. Focus on Your Meta Data Too

Your content on your site should have title tags and meta descriptions.
  • Meta keywords are pretty much ignored by search engines nowadays, but if you still use them, make sure it talks specifically to that page and that it is also formatted correctly.
  • Your meta description should be unique and also speak to that specific page. Duplicate meta descriptions from page to page will not get you anywhere.
Title tags should also be unique! Think your title as a 4-8 word ad, so do your best to entice the reader so they want to click and read more.

Summary

You should always keep SEO in the forefront of your mind, and always follow best practices. Skipping the basics of SEO will only leave your site's foundation a mess and prevent you from fully maximizing revenue opportunities.

Snapchat-style self-destructing email service created

Pluto users can choose to unsend their emails at any time

Pluto users can choose to unsend their emails at any time

Users of the new service Pluto Mail can set an expiry date on their emails, or simply ensure that they auto-expire upon opening
A Snapchat-style self-destructing email serviced has been created by two Harvard law students.
Pluto allows users to unsend emails at any time, unlike Gmail which currently only offers their users five seconds to stop any embarrassing errors being sent. With Pluto, you also have the ability to edit sent emails if the recipient has not yet opened the email.

If you’re constantly wondering whether or not somebody has actually read your email, Pluto can also inform you when a recipient has opened your message.
The service is not a standalone email provider itself. Users of existing email clients such as Gmail, Apple Mail and Outlook simply need to sign up – although there is currently a waiting list of approximately 1,500 people. Importantly, the recipient does not need to sign up to Pluto in order for these features to be utilised by the sender.
The idea of the self-destructing message follows the success of Snapchat, in which images appear for one to ten seconds only. Telegram, another messaging app, has also proved successful for those in need of greater privacy: messages sent using the service are heavily encrypted and can also self-deconstruct.
Similarly to apps like these, the creators have attempted to address privacy concerns surrounding email. David Gobaud and Lindsay Lin, both Harvard students, say that the service “addresses the issue that once you send an email you lose control of it.”
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, co-founder David Gobaud added: “When you have conservations in real life, it doesn’t follow you for the rest of your life.”
“Sure, there are some business emails or emails related to a contract you might want to keep but most other emails, you want them to go away.”
Sending emails via Pluto should make the process more secure as it gives you “better control of email forwarding”. For example, if you send an email via Pluto and the recipient forwards it on, the message will still expire or unsend for those strangers.
In addition, attachments are stored in the cloud and once a user unsends an email or if it expires, the attachments are deleted. Although this does not delete files off a recipient’s hard drive if they have downloaded it previously, it will stop attachments being accessible from the recipient’s inbox.
The creators also hope that the self-destructive nature of the emails will mean that recipients respond more quickly to emails. Pluto suggests subject lines such as “This message self-deconstructs at midnight” or “Open within the next 2 hours for a special invitation” to grab their attention.

Logitech's backlit keyboard for smart TV

logitech-k830.jpg

Smart TV is great, it enables you to watch media content from your computer or the 'net without the need for a PC in your living room. The one bad thing? Typing with a remote control is the worst.
Thankfully, products like the new Logitech Living-Room Keyboard K830 make typing and navigating smart TV platforms, and HTPCs if you do decide to go that route, a little easier
.
The keyboard is wireless and features a rechargeable battery onboard. The Logitech comes with a mousing surface and left and right mouse buttons.
The main difference between this and the cheaper K400 is that the K830 is backlit and also features a light sensor which dims according to the light level in the room. It also appears the K830 is quite different design-wise from the recent Harmony keyboard, and lacks the adaptors and IR sensor of that product.
My only potential gripe, and its one common with most Logitech "leisure" keyboards, is that there aren't dedicated media controls. Not only is pressing a combination of "Function button and F11" inelegant, but it could be potentially incompatible with some setups.
The Logitech Illuminated Living-Room Keyboard K830 will be available in the US and Europe in April 2014 for $99.99. It will be available for £90 in the UK

Hackers go after Google users in advanced phishing attack

Hackers are targeting Google users' passwords in a new advanced phishing scheme that is difficult to detect and block, security experts at the firm Bitdefender said on Tuesday.

The attack began a couple of days ago and has managed to spread fast, said Bianca Stanescu, a security specialist at the firm.
"We haven't spotted this type of phishing attack. It's enhanced, usually the security solutions block the webpage for malicious activity before users open it, but this time security solutions receive the encoded content and they can't really block it."

Wireless homes that use magnetic fields to transfer electricity are up and running

(CNN) -- Katie Hall was shocked the second she saw it: a light-bulb glowing in the middle of a room with no wires attached.
Looking back, it was a crude experiment, she remembers: a tiny room filled with gigantic copper refrigerator coils -- the kind you'd see if you cracked open the back of your freezer.
She walked in and out between the coils and the bulb -- and still the bulb glowed.
"I said: 'Let's work on this. This is the future.'"

Robotic Pocket Printer sits in the palm of your hand by Zuta Labs

Most pocket-sized printers are really shrunken versions of what you'd see on your desk. Rather boring, don't you think? Zuta Labs' upcoming Pocket Printer robot may liven things up a little. Instead of using an old-fashioned paper feed, it runs over the page laying grayscale ink. This Roomba-like approach isn't just a party trick, though. Besides leading to a very portable design, it lets you print on any size page you like -- if you need to get a legal form while you're at the coffee shop, you can.

It’s “graphene.”

This Makeup Printer Could Destroy The Cosmetics Industry

A lot has changed about makeup since we were little girls. Back then, if we wanted to wear it, we'd have to sneak a little bit of lipstick when no one was looking or save up our allowance to buy a mascara. But now, everything is about to get way easier ... and digital.

Flexible Paper thin Tablets, mobiles and TV Screens will be next

WASHINGTON: Scientists have used a focused beam of electrons to create some of the smallest nanowires ever made, an advance that paves the way for flexible, paper-thin tablets and television displays.

Junhao Lin, a Vanderbilt University student and visiting scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), used a finely focused beam of electrons to create the flexible metallic wires only three atoms wide: One thousandth the width of the microscopic wires used to connect the transistors in today's integrated circuits

Google's modular smartphone in Project Ara

This week in Mountain View, Google held its first-ever developer conference for Project Ara. Developed by a small team within the company called ATAP staffed with ex-DARPA engineers and some of the brightest minds at Google, Ara is a mission to make a modular smartphone. It'd be the last phone you ever needed to buy, because you'd be able to swap out everything from the camera to the display to the battery, in order to always have the exact phone you want.

Preview of Android 4.5 Released

Android 4.5 previewIt was last October when Android 4.4 KitKat was finally released, which debuted on the Nexus 5 first.
