How to schedule Shutdown PC running Windows Xp, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

In college days i was was die hard downloader and i was restricted to 2:00 A.M to 8:00 A.M for free downloading so it was my habit to wake up at 2:00 and start downloading at 2:00 A.M, because my free downloading time was till 8:00 A.M and after that downloading was chargeable so those days i used this method to automatically shutdown my PC. You can use this feature as per your need. or just for knowledge.

Use Scheduled Task To Shutdown Pc

1. No open Task Scheduler by typing task Scheduler in Start Button Search Box.

2.  Now click on Create Task from the lest pane of Task Scheduler.

3. Now click on Trigger tab and then click on New button.

4. Now define the Date and Time on which you want to schedule the task to be executed automatically under On Time, if you want to execute the task only once. You can also choose any appropriate option to schedule your task. After defining time click on OK button.

5. Now choose Action from the tab and then click on New button.

6.  Under Action choose Start a program, and then type C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /l  under Program/Script text box.then press OK button.

Now your PC will be automatically Shutdown on the time given in Action settings.

Create shortcut keys to Log Off, Shutdown, Restart, Hibernate and Lock Computer.

You can Log Off, Shutdown, Restart, Hibernate and Lock Computer from Start Button easily, But you can also create shortcut to do the specific operations.

1. Create a shortcut on Desktop by Right Clicking on Desktop and then choose New and then Shortcut.

2. Now type the following commands

To shutdown : shutdown /s

To log off : shutdown /L

To restart : shutdown /r

To hibernate : shutdown /h

To Lock Computer(Same as Windows+L) : rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

3. Now type the name of the shortcut, e.g i used command to shutdown computer so here i am using shortcut name as Shutdown Laptop.

4. Now click on Finish button. Now a shortcut to shutdown computer has been created on your desktop. Simply click on the shortcut to shutdown your computer.

You can also create shortcut key to shutdown your computer.

How to Create Shortcut key to open any Application Software

I use internet all the day and my favorite Web Browser is Google Chrome so whenever i power on my laptop i start Google Chrome and then my favorite websites with new Gadgets and Technology Updates. By opening Google Chrome from start button or from desktop shortcut, we can also create shortcut key to open any Software Application from our Computer.

• Right click on the Application Shortcut and Choose Properties. here i am creating shortcut of MS-Word.

• Under Shortcut Properties Click on the textbox of Shortcut Key: and then press any key combination which you want to use for MS-Word. If shortcut key will be available then it will be assigned otherwise windows automatically assign the combination for your ease, So it could not create any conflict in pre assigned shortcut keys.

How to Move mouse pointer with keyboard.

To configure Sticky keys to use mouse from keyboard in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 follow the steps.

Mouse is not working, and you need to move the mouse pointer and want to click urgently on your computer. No worries! we can use our keyboard as mouse if mouse of our computer is not working. Steps to use your keyboard as mouse are as:-

1. Press Shift key 5 times, you will see sticky key dialog box on your screen.

2. Now press Tab key to select Settings then press Spacebar or Enter key.

3. From Accessibility Options window choose Mouse tab using Tab button and then press Spacebar. Now under Mouse tab Check the box saying Use MouseKeys. Now you can use your Num Keypad as a mouse pointer. 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 buttons will move your mouse pointer up, down, lef and right and 5 will be used as left click.

This option is working in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

To configure Sticky keys to use mouse from keyboard in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 follow the steps.

1. Go to Control Panel by pressing Start button shortcut Windows key.

2. Now select Ease of Access Center and then choose  Make keyboard easier to use using Tab button and then Spacebar.

3. Using Tab  button Check the box saying Turn on Mouse Keys. Now your keyboard can work as mouse and you can also configure more settings by choosing Set up Mouse Keys link.

Note: We can not use Keypad as Mouse in Laptops Comes without Numeric keypad on the Right Side. To use the this features in those laptops we can remap the numpad keys with the basic 0-9 keys seen below functions keys which is not easy for everyone. Or you can attach a USB keyboard to use the feature in emergency if that keyboard is available. generally we don't need to enable this option, it is needed in some emergency case when we need to use mouse but mouse is not working.

How to enable Safe Mode in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 with F8 key.

Safe mode is very useful if Windows is not working properly or is very slow. We can restore our windows or troubleshoot the drivers or software's which are creating trouble in starting windows. All the previous versions of windows have a special key F8 at startup by which we can enter in Safe Mode. But in windows 8 and Windows 8.1 it is disabled by default by Microsoft. But we can enable Safe Mode in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 by bcdedit command, which edits the boot loader of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
1. Open Command prompt by type cmd in search box of start button and Run as Administrator

2. Type  Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes and press Enter.

3. Now press F8 key on next startup of Windows to enter into Safe Mode and then press F4 or 4 to start Safe Mode.

To disable F8 hotkey type command Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu no in Dos Command Prompt.

How to enable hibernate Option in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

By default hibernate option is disabled and you need to enable hibernate option in start button. So we can use the feature in which we don't need to close any program or software. By applying hibernate all the programs remain open when we power on our Computer or Laptop again.

Steps to enable hibernate are as follows.

1. Open Power Options from Control Panel or type powercfg.cpl in search box of Windows 7/8/8.1.

2. From Power Options window click on Choose what the power button does link on the left side of the pane.

3. Under setting hibernate option is disabled by default.

4. Now click on Change settings that are currently available.

5. Under Shutdown settings enable Hibernate and then click on Save changes button.

Now you can see hibernate under the shutdown option of your start button.

Enjoy hibernate and get rid of time taken in Powering On and Shutting Down. It also helps to prevents for Windows Corruption.

How to Free C drive by Compressing Hibernate File?

Hibernate feature is started with Windows XP and now available in all later versions of Microsoft Windows 7,8,8.1, which allows us to save the open applications and contents just like we pause a game while playing, All the open applications remain open we we power on the computer again. Basically whatever we open in our Computer remains in RAM and when we hibernate our computer that that portion of RAM is saved to secondary storage Hard Disk, which needs some space to be occupied by hibernate. So Microsoft has reserved some hard disk space  in the form of hiberfil.sys in C drive which occupies some portion of our Hard disk depending upon the size of RAM we have installed.

I have installed 6 GB of RAM in my laptop so here hiberfil.sis has occupied 4.71 GB of hard disk space. Now to free some space in C drive i can decrease the size of hibernate file with simple command.

powercfg hibernate size X

Here X is the percentage of RAM we want for hiberfil.sys, if we want 50% of RAM size to be reserved for hiberfil.sys then we can type 50 on the place of X.

powercfg hibernate size 50

Now file size of hiberfil.sys is 3GB, because i have 6GB of RAM installed in my Laptop. It was approx 4.7 GB before which was approx 80% of RAM installed on my Laptop.

We can give any size to the hiberfil.sys upto 100% of RAM installed in your PC.
